Monday truths

Oh it’s been a hot minute but my thoughts needed somewhere to spill today.

And here’s what landed.

From Jo Phillips

I remember the initial blow back about the addition of Ms as an honorific. So many, especially men, just could not and would not wrap their brains around it. That alone made me quickly adopt Ms. As my honorific of choice.

I also remember when the first person we knew chose to keep their “maiden” name when they got married. You would have thought the world might end given the conversation that might take place. Surely such a marriage wouldn’t last. It has, no more or less happy than many others regardless of name selection.

And then… the man where I worked chose to change his last name to that of his wife! What a travesty so many thought. How weak. Not really – his name was unpronounceable and horrendously long, hers was straightforward. The world continues to turn almost 40 years later.

Whether it’s names, hem lengths, bathing suit styles or obtaining credit cards and loans in our own names based on our own merit…

The lesson I learned is that the world keeps turning, people are no worse off when we accept and adjust to change that doesn’t actually harm or affect us.

If anything, the world becomes a brighter and better place for everyone.
